A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested pending a full technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
